On average, a single person commits suicide every 16.2 minutes. It is the third leading cause of death among 15 to 24-year-olds and the second one among 24 to 35-year-olds.
In Bangkok, Thailand, a 65-year-old woman reportedly took her own life when she jumped into a crocodile pit. According to BBC, Wanpen Inyai threw herself into a pond on the Samut Prakarn Crocodile Farm and Zoo.
Family members of the old woman mentioned to the police that Inyai was initially depressed before taking her own life.
The tourist attractions of Thailand are said to have lenient safety rules.
The authorities confirmed Inyai’s death on Thursday afternoon. Witnesses claimed that Inyai removed her shoes before actually jumping into the pond. It was 3 meters deep and contained hundreds of adult crocodiles.
The staff of the zoo tried to help Inyai by retrieving long sticks to prevent the crocodiles from attacking her but to no avail.
Inyai was in fact, declared missing by her family before she went to the zoo to commit suicide. They found out that they couldn’t find her but the authorities told them to wait for 24 hours first.
Investigations revealed that Inyai was not the only woman who killed herself in the zoo. In 2002, another woman also committed suicide in the place and a decade before that, an individual also took his or her own life.
The owner, Uthen Youngprapakorn, already claimed that they have already installed additional fences and other security measures along the walkways. According to their website, the zoo has more than 100,000 crocodiles.
