President Rodrigo Duterte has been lauded the most active president to date because he quickly implemented all the promises he made back when he was still campaigning for the presidency.
Unlike most of his predecessors, he made sure that he would fulfill his ideology of getting rid of the corruption in the country through his anti-drugs campaign, among others.
However, people have also noted how simple his lifestyle was. To date, he wanted his presidential inauguration to be as non-disruptive and as quiet as possible, so he only invited key people and guests.
He also never failed to show that he absolutely loves his country and in fact, has been quoted dozens of times that he would “die for the Philippines.”
Here are the following incidents wherein Duterte have shown that he’s humble and simple in his own ways:
1. He doesn’t approve of media fanfare
As mentioned, Duterte’s inauguration was simple and he did not want the media to clamor for this event. He did not allow them to go inside the Malacañang Palace.
When he was just a mayor of Davao City, he also did not want the media to cover his events and appearances. Most people only gained information about him through social media.
Also, his inauguration was only held in Malacañang, and not in Quirino Grandstand, unlike the presidents before. He did not declare the day a holiday as well. Duterte said that he did want to cause inconvenience, hence non-holiday declaration.
2. Filipino food and Davao staples
In his inauguration
Duterte only wanted simple Filipino food and beverages to be served to the guests in attendance. His menu reportedly includes monggo guisado, lumpia, pandesal with kesong puti and beef longganisa.
Meanwhile, desserts were Davao durian tartlets and Duterte’s favorite, maruya.
3. Bus as lift service for guests, instead of being convoyed in luxury cars
Duterte requested that his staff and other officials utilize buses instead. According to him, this would cause minimal disruption to Manila traffic.
4. Mindanao-based designers
Duterte was dressed simply in his inauguration, unlike past presidents who have preferred designer suits. He sought Mindanao-based fashion designer Boni Adaza to design his attire.
The ecru-colored barong is made from piña jusi or synthetic fiber with patterns based from the Manobo tribe.
Members of his family also wore outfits made by local designers. Duterte's daughter, Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte, and his ex-wife, Elizabeth Zimmerman, wore Filipiniana-inspired gowns designed by Davao-based designer Silverio Anglacer.
Sebastian “Baste” Duterte wore a Mindanao silk barong designed and made by the Davao Fashion and Design Council (DFDC). Paolo Duterte, meanwhile, wore one that was designed by Erwin Lee Tan.
5. His love for country and Filipinos
Duterte, so far, is the only president who constantly affirms and declares his love and loyalty to the country and the citizens.
He championed that his motivation to run for presidency was his love for the Filipinos and the strong urge to serve them with his all.
What do you think about Duterte? Do you really think he’s the most humble president out there?
